IDEERS 2023 Taipei, Taiwan Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools On 20-24 September 2023, a total of four second-year students of the UR6526001 Civil Engineering program (Cakriron A/L Bon Lot, Suwarnakalisswaren A/L Velayutham, Sriatiqah binti Mohd Jada and Nik Nurul Afiyah binti Wan Zainodin) from FKTA participated in the IDEERS 2023 competition which was held in Taipei, Taiwan. The students were guided by Ir. Dr. Nik Zainab binti Nik Azizan and accompanied by Dr. Farahiyah binti Abdul Rahman. IDEERS (Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools) is an annual competition that challenges students to design and build model structures that can withstand the forces of a simulated earthquake. The competition aims to promote awareness of earthquake engineering and encourage students to pursue careers in this field. During the competition, students are given a set of guidelines and materials to build their models, which are then tested on a shaking table that simulates the effects of an earthquake. Models will be judged on their ability to withstand vibrations and maintain their structural integrity. IDEERS is not only a competition, but also an educational program that provides students with hands-on experience in earthquake engineering and design. Therefore, through this competition, FKTA students who are involved can develop critical thinking skills, team work, and problem-solving abilities while also being able to meet other university students from abroad.
Re-Trash Bin from Used Plastic Bottles On 3 June 2023, a total of 4 students from the Bachelor of Civil Engineering program who took the AMJ41403 Engineers for Society (SULAM) course under the supervision of Mrs. Zaity Syazwani and Dr. Salwa made waste baskets from plastic bottles for recycling purposes in Pulau Kapas, Terengganu along with 60 other students from the Bachelor of Construction Technology, Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology programs, and also local tourists. This activity is one example of a practice known as "upcycling" or "recycling". Recycling involves turning waste materials or items that are no longer used into useful objects by using creativity and skills. This activity provides an opportunity to engage creativity, problem-solving skills, and awareness of the importance of reducing the use of single-use plastics. By learning how to turn plastic waste into useful objects, participants can reduce the amount of plastic thrown away and benefit the environment. The donation from the Office of the Menteri Besar of Perlis @PejabatMBPerlis of RM4200 and Megajati @megajati is thanked. The donation has helped make this activity a success.
